‘Australians are victims’ James Paterson slams Albanese govt for detainee handling

Shadow Home Affairs Minister James Paterson says the Albanese government has been a “shambles” when it comes to their handling of the freed detainees.

Labor faces scrutiny following revelations the government made zero applications to re-detain any detainees released after 2023’s High Court ruling.

Documents tabled to the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee on Monday provided for the first time a breakdown of the serious crimes committed by the detainees.

The documents further revealed that 24 of the freed detainees have reoffended since they were released into the community.

Mr Paterson told Sky News host Chris Kenny that Labor is “weak on national security”.

“They are slow on community safety; they do not prioritise these issues, and Australians are victims as a result,” he said.
