An investigation into Victoria's botched bid to stage the 2026 Commonwealth Games is expected to reveal bureaucratic incompetence is to blame.

It has been reported the Victorian Auditor General's inquiry will also highlight a lack of due
diligence was executed in the lead-up to the event's cancellation.

The decision by former state premier Daniel Andrews to pull out of the games is expected to cost
taxpayers at least $600 million.

The former premier made the announcement in July 2023, sparking much backlash.

Despite several cities showing some enthusiasm, the 2026 Games has yet to find a new home.
