MOVEMENT for Social Justice (MSJ) David Abdulah said Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is behaving very similar to former Unites States president Donald Trump, when she made her controversial "light them up" comments at a UNC political meeting in Chaguanas on Monday.
Referring to an incident when a home-owner shot and killed an intruder at her Chaguanas home on July 29, Persad-Bissessar advised citizens, "When the criminals invade your home, draw your licensed firearm and light them up! Empty the whole clip and reload too. Fight fire with fire!"
Addressing this comment during a news conference at the party's headquarters in Marabella on Thursday, Abdulah said Persad-Bissessar's did not surprise him.
He expressed a similar view to statements made by the Prime Minister during the local government elections campaign.
Focusing on Persad-Bissessar's "light them up" comment, Abdulah said, "Some of the statements by Mrs Persad-Bissessar are not dissimilar from the kinds of slogans used by Trump."
He added, "Just listen to the cadence of her statement, 'light them up'...'lock her up'. Similar cadence."
"Lock her up" was a statement first used by Trump's supporters during the US 2016 presidential campaign, against his democratic rival Hillary Clinton.
At one of the presidential debates that year, Trump himself said that Clinton “would be in jail” if he were president.
On Wednesday, Trump was indicted on federal charges related to 2020 election subversion.
