Trinidad and Tobago sprinter Michelle-Lee Ahye missed out on a place in the final of the women’s 100m event at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, on Sunday.
Ahye, running in semi-final three, finished sixth in 11.24 seconds. The race was won by Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce in 10.93 and American Aleia Hobbs grabbed the second automatic qualification spot in 10.95.
Jamaican Shericka Jackson won heat one in 10.84 and Dina Asher-Smith of Great Britain was second in 10.89.
The top four finishers qualified for the final from heat two. Jamaican Elaine Thompson-Herah won in 10.82, Marie-Josee Ta Lou of Ivory Coast was second in 10.87, American Melissa Jefferson third in 10.92 and Majinga Kambundji of Switzerland fourth in 10.96.
The final was held after press time on Sunday at 10.50 pm.
On Saturday night, Ahye booked a place in the semifinals.
She finished second in heat six in 11.18.
The top three in each of the seven heats qualified automatically along with the next three fastest runners.
Finishing ahead of Ahye was Hobbs in 11.04 and Edidiong Ofinome Odiong of Bahrain was third in 11.28.
The other sprinters winning their heat were Jackson (11.02), Fraser-Pryce (10.87), Thompson-Herah (11.15), Ta Lou (10.92), Asher-Smith (10.84) and Kambundji (10.97).
TT quarter-miler Dwight St Hillaire did not advance past the heats of the men’s 400m event, on Sunday.
St Hillaire, running in heat four, finished sixth in 46.60 and did not progress.
The first three finishers in each of the six heats plus the next six fastest runners advanced to the semifinals.
American Champion Allison won heat four in 45.56, Dylan Borlee of Belgium was second in 45.70 and Isaac Makwala of Botswana grabbed the third automatic qualification spot when he finished third in 45.93.
Fourth-placed Mikhail Litvin of Kazakhstan was fast enough to earn a spot in the semifinals with a season’s best time of 46.00.
Jereem Richards will face the starter in the heats of the men’s 200-metre event, on Monday.
The TT runner will line up in heat two of seven from 8.12 pm, TT time.
He will be aiming for a top-three finish to advance automatically to the semifinals. The fastest three in each heat plus the next three fastest runners progress to the next round.
Richards, the 2018 Commonwealth gold medallist, will have to battle against Canadian Aaron Brown in heat two. Richards and Brown have both competed at a high level in the 200m event over the last few years.
Richards achieved a personal best of 19.83 seconds in the event at the 2022 National Open Championships at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo, last month.
TT athlete Eric Harrison Jnr will run in heat seven at 8.47 pm. Harrison has a personal best of 20.18.
Some of the athletes expected to advance past the heats are Joseph Fahnbulleh of Liberia (heat one), American Erriyon Knighton (heat three), American Kenneth Bednarek (heat four), American Fred Kerley (heat five), Canadian Andre De Grasse (heat six) and American Noah Lyles (heat seven).
