Liberal candidate for Gilmore Andrew Constance says Labor has been sending “mixed signals” about boat turnbacks as he affirms the importance of Operation Sovereign Borders.

Mr Constance said Operation Sovereign Borders has “not only kept Australia safe” but has also “saved lives”.

“It stopped the red carpet of people smuggling with those god-awful leaky boats,” Mr Constance told Sky News host Chris Kenny.

“The Gilmore electorate is a defence community.”
