American military mission to end in Iraq

almost 3 years in news

United States President Joe Biden has set out a precise timeline for the American military mission to end in Iraq.

Meeting with Iraq Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, the leaders agreed US troops would remain in the country under new roles as part of a major shift in strategy.

The troops in the country will now be in advisory and training roles by the end of the year, ending the combat mission in the area.

The plan will require 2,500 soldiers to remain in Iraq to deter terrorist groups returning and avoiding a repeat of 2011 when the troops were withdrawn and shortly sent back.
