Bill Gates was told to step down from Microsoft board over alleged affair Report

Microsoft board members told Bill Gates to step down from the board last year so they could begin investigations into his alleged affair with a female employee, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The Wall Street Journal reported in 2019 board members told Mr Gates to step down from his role after they brought in a law firm to conduct an investigation into an alleged affair.

A female employee had written a letter saying she had a relationship with the Microsoft founder.

"Microsoft received a concern in the latter half of 2019 that Bill Gates sought to initiate an intimate relationship with a company employee in the year 2000,” a Microsoft spokesperson said.

"A committee of the Board reviewed the concern, aided by an outside law firm to conduct a thorough investigation”.

Bill Gates stepped down from the board in March 2020 but his representatives said the decision had nothing to do with an affair.

"There was an affair almost 20 years ago which ended amicably,” a spokesperson said.

"His decision to transition off the board was in no way related to this matter. In fact, he had expressed an interest in spending more time on his philanthropy starting several years earlier."
