School food program gets the cash

The NDP government ended months of silence on the future of a school nutrition program and confirmed Thursday it will continue to get funding.
Premier John Horgan issued a brief statement saying the school fruit and vegetable nutrition program will be funded for the upcoming school year.
The statement came after the issue arose in the legislature, where the B.C. Liberal Opposition questioned Agriculture Minister Lana Popham about why the sponsor group could not get an answer about whether its funding will carry on.
Correspondence showed the B.C. Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation has been trying since February to confirm through three different ministries that it will get continued funding in the $3-million range for the program.
Popham told the legislature this week she supported the program, but wouldn’t fully commit to funding it.
B.C. has contributed for 10 years to the program, which uses thousands of volunteers and some donations to deliver fruit, vegetables and milk to classrooms all over B.C.
