IMAM SHERAZ ALI, head of the Nur-e-Islam mosque in El Socorro Road, San Juan, was sworn in on Tuesday as a permanent government senator to fill the vacancy left by the recent death of former energy minister the late Franklin Khan.
Senators stood for Ali's swearing-in, 45 minutes into the sitting, during which he was greeted by Opposition Senator Wade Mark and Independent Senator Paul Richards.
A brief biography of Ali appears on the website of the University of the Southern Caribbean.
It says he is originally from Marabella, and attended Presentation College, San Fernando and Iere High School, Siparia.
Sheraz is an Islamic scholar who holds a bachelor's degree in Islamic studies from Darul Uloom (Trinidad and Tobago) Institute of Higher Islamic Studies and Secondary Education, based in Cunupia, where he also teaches.
He also has a bachelor's degree in agriculture and a master's degree in food science and technology, and was said to be pursuing a doctorate in agriculture.
Sheraz is a director of the Darul Amaan Freeport Children Home and is an approved mediator with the Mediation Council of TT.
He is the chairman of Concerned Muslims of TT and has represented the Muslim community on a number of government initiatives involving Muslims who have left these shores, the biography said. Otherwise, news reports show Sheraz has advocated for the return of the wives and children of TT men who had left this country to fight for ISIS in Syria.
