Victoria council votes to continue Richardson Street bikeway plan

Victoria council opted Friday to continue a controversial plan for a bikeway project on Richardson Street in a 6-3 vote that rejected a motion to delay for further consultation.

Under the plan, drivers and cyclists will share two lanes of traffic, while traffic speeds and volumes will be reduced as vehicles are diverted to nearby streets.

The plan has generated opposition, with some saying the bikeway is unnecessary and the changes will make the road less safe.

Coun. Charlayne Thornton-Joe put forward a motion Thursday to delay including the bikeway plans in the city’s financial plan for further consultation. Councillors Stephen Andrew and Geoff Young supported the defeated motion.
