POLICE COMMISSIONER Gary Griffith on Thursday said he will be assisting his counterpart in the St Vincent and the Grenadines following a request by their Police Commissioner for assistance.
There has been an outpouring of support both regionally and internationally to the Caribbean nation following the eruption of the La Soufriere volcano last Friday and again on Tuesday. Earlier this week 39 Defence Force members went to the country with an additional 11 expected to arrive later to assist. The 50 along with a TT Coast Guard vessel will remain in the country for two weeks.
Speaking at a media briefing on Thursday, Griffith said he was asked for a list of items namely camouflage uniforms and caps, combat boots , respirators, cots, goggles and blankets. He said many of the items were already set aside to be sent adding that the region’s Commissioners of Police have also been assisting in providing water, packaged meals and raincoats.
“We have acquired as much as we can from our stores and we have been liaising with the Ministry of National Security and hopefully this will be sent in a few days to the police in St Vincent.”
Addressing police uniforms locally, Griffith said the present uniform is easily mimicked, adding that he has an issue with police officers on roadblock exercise in plain clothes.
“We’ve gotten approval from Cabinet to alter the uniform so it will make it much easier for us and more difficult for anyone to try to imitate police officers. The present uniform we had, you could see similar in several security companies. So with new uniform it will be difficult for anyone to imitate a police officer and again I ask the public if at any time you are confronted by a police officer or someone who claims, you demand to see the badge and ID card.”
Griffith added that by July there will be a full roll out of body cameras for each member of the four elite units and nine tasks forces. There will be five body cameras issued to each of the 77 police stations that will be used for roadblocks, patrols or on warrant exercises.
