World to continue suffering ‘wave after wave’ of COVID until a ‘circuit breaker’

Former Australian Medical Association Vice President Dr Stephen Parnis has told Sky News the world will continue to experience “wave after wave” of COVID-19 until there is a “circuit breaker”.

Italy was plunged into a three-day lockdown over Easter as the country recorded more than 18,000 new cases a day with total deaths hitting over 111,000.

“There is a great degree of anxiety in how best to proceed because no one really has gone through a pandemic in living memory,” Dr Parnis said.

“We are traumatised by the second wave, by lockdown, by daily numbers of cases, and also the stories of people becoming desperately unwell.

“We know that even 12 months on, the rest of the world is still going through some terrible traumas.

“Wave after wave of the coronavirus and COVID will continue until there is a circuit breaker and the only thing that will change the game is widespread vaccination and that’s the only shop we’ve got.”
