DR Stephen Ramroop, who contested and lost a post for deputy leader of the United National Congress (UNC) on Vasant Bharath's slate, has resigned from the party with immediate effect.
Ramroop, in a letter to chairman Peter Kanhai, said it is unfortunate that membership of the UNC does not have any benefits for him at this time.
Ramroop, an orthopaedic surgeon, said the party has been unable to engage him or use his skills and competencies in medicine; managing health care; humanitarian relief and assistance; disaster risk reduction, including risk and crisis management; pandemic management; or forensic medicine.
A former medical director of the San Fernando General Hospital, Ramroop also served as CEO of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) under the People’s Partnership.
He was among the candidates screened to contest the San Fernando West seat for the UNC in the last general election but was bypassed in favour of attorney Sean Sobers, who failed to take the seat frim the incumbent, Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi..
Ramroop thanked Bharath for giving him “the only opportunity to serve the party at a leadership level during the last internal elections.”
In his letter of resignation Ramroop also said, “The inability of the leadership in the past months to determine the root cause of defeats in the last two general elections, in a scientific and consultative manner, by engaging a wealth of resources available to them, is indeed sad and does not provide me with a reasonable risk-based algorithm for the future improvement of this nation and does not engage my ability to assist in this regard at a political and leadership level.”
He identified many instances in which he said he had assisted the party financially, especially the office of the Siparia MP, Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar, and offered discounted professional medical services at his clinic and free medical clinics.
“I am positive that I have served this party, faithfully, honourably and professionally.”
He said he will remain friends with a number of people in the party whom he holds in high esteem and respect.
