Police hunt escaped prisoner

about 3 years in TT News day

POLICE are searching for a convicted chicken thief who escaped from  the Golden Grove Prison in Arouca on Friday morning.
Prison sources said Siew-Persad Ramdass, alias "Pope," was with other prisoners in the garden area called “The Veg” when he escaped.
Ramdass, of Blanchisseuse Road, Arima, was sentenced to one year's imprisonment in December last year after he pleaded guilty to stealing chickens from a farmer.
The area where he escaped is on the southeastern side of Golden Grove, prison sources said.
The prisoners usually tend the garden from 7 am. Ramdass was absent when prison officers took a headcount about two hours later.
The escape happened just a day after the Prison Officers Association complained that there is no working alarm system at the prison.
On Thursday, president of the association Ceron Richards said the Maximum Security Prison  has been without an alarm system for years.
"Imagine, the smallest parlour has alarms and cameras, but the Maximum Security Prison, which is supposed to be a high-security facility, doesn't have one. That in itself is alarming."
Responding to Richards’ claims, National Security Minister Stuart Young said security cameras and alarms have been approved for installation at the prisons.
