MANDEVILLE, Manchester - The Sydney L Blake Basic School was recently refurbished with cubicles for students to promote social distancing amidst the novel coronavirus pandemic.
The school located in north-west Manchester was adopted by the Jamaica Civil Service Association (JCSA) with the facility receiving well-needed resources including water tanks.
Although face-to-face classes have been disallowed with exception for students sitting exit examinations, the Manchester Chapter of the JCSA still believes that there should be preparations made for the resumption of physical classes in the future.
"With the recent announcement made that schools should continue to engage in online learning, the cubicles will not be used for a little while. However, the units, which have been approved by the Ministry of Health and Wellness, will be instrumental in the prevention of the spread of COVID-19 when physical learning resumes at the school," the group said in a statement.
The 101-year-old Sydney L Blake Basic school located in Mile Gully, Manchester, benefited from the group's launch of the Manchester chapter of projects for 2021.
Clarence Frater, third vice-president of the JCSA, stated that as the association continues to be guided by its mission statement, it will seek to identify needs in various communities and offer assistance where it can through its 14 chapters.
"The JCSA, in a bid to have a wider reach of its members, has established chapters across the island, which is divided into three regions, namely north-east region, western region and the south-central region. Each chapter is required to identify a project each year to expound on the values of the JCSA," he said.
Teachers and students at the institution expressed gratitude to the JCSA for its contribution and their desire for a continued partnership with the association. Students at the institution were also gifted with bags containing items including snacks, books, pencils, and other stationery items during the ceremony.
