Outgoing THA representative denies bribe offer to step down

Outgoing Lambeau/Signal Hill representative Jomo Pitt says he was never offered money to step down nor was he forced to do so.
Pitt, outgoing Secretary for Sport and Youth Affairs, announced during the THA budget debate on June 25, 2020, that he would not seek a third term as the representative for the area.
His announcement triggered speculation on social media that he may have been asked to step down.
But speaking at a PNM meeting at the Lambeau Hard Court on Tuesday night, Pitt sought to set the record straight.
“I was never forced to step down. I was never offered any money to step. I was not offered any position to step down,” he told supporters.
Pitt said he acknowledged that someone stepping down out of principle might be mind-boggling to some people.
Pitt recalled when he became the representative for the area in 2013, he had set the benchmark for the largest margin of victory ever in THA election history.
“That is a benchmark that people have to beat right now. And, I am leaving now setting a benchmark of principle.”
He also said he made a commitment to deliver an indoor facility in Tobago within his term of office.
“And if I did not, I will not seek re-election. It is clear as that.”
The $30 million facility, which will cater to all major sports, is expected to be completed at the end of the year.
Pitt, in his address, also poured cold water on the view, in some quarters, that Davidson-Celestine should have contested the Speyside/L’Anse Fourmi/Parlatuvier seat, which she held for eight years under the former Orville London-led THA, instead of Lambeau/Signal Hill.
Saying a vacancy was created after he stepped down, Pitt said Davidson-Celestine now lives in Tobago West.
“To be an effective area representative, you have to be close to the area that you live in so that you could be called on within 24 hours and deliver.
“If she is living down on this side and has to get to Charlotteville, it takes hours, depending on where she is and what she is doing. An open spot was created and she came.”
Pitt recalled former representative Oswald Williams was from Les Coteaux and served Lambeau/Signal Hill for two terms.
He said former chief secretary Orville London also represented the people of Scarborough/Calder Hall even though he was not originally from the area.
The Prime Minister, he said, is originally from Mason Hall but has served the Diego Martin West constituency for over 30 years.
“So, leh we eh get confused or tied up.”
Pitt said there is nothing wrong with Davidson-Celestine contesting Lambeau/Signal Hill.
“There is nothing wrong with Tracy representing us here. I am introducing this new candidate. This new area representative. This new person to be the next Chief Secretary, the next area representative for Lambeau/ Signal.
“And I want you all to give her the same support I am giving her. I am asking you all to do the same for her. Please, for the last eight years you have been there by my side. Do the same for this young lady.”
