The Guardian’s Washington bureau chief, David Smith, tells Anushka Asthana that it was President Trump’s incitement of the crowd that led directly to the storming of the Capitol. It was the culmination of weeks of false claims that the election had been stolen from him and a refusal to concede to Joe Biden.
