THE Opposition UNC is confident of winning the January 25 local government by-elections.
The party expressed this confidence on Friday in a statement which announced its candidates.
They are:
Sheldon Louis Garcia (Arima Central)
Richard Gautam Sukdeo (Cunupia)
Tylon Dwight Farrell (Hindustan/St Mary's)
Daniel John (Hollywood)
and John Laquis ( Morne Coco/Alyce Glen).
The party said they were chosen from "numerous individuals of impeccable character" who answered its call and filed nominations. The UNC added that all nominees faced its screening committee, chaired by UNC leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
In expressing confidence of victory, the UNC recalled it wrested the Moruga/Tableland constituency from the PNM in the August 10 general election. The PNM won that election 22-19.
The UNC said the campaigns of its candidates will strictly adhere to all covid 19 protocols and it called for "all hands on deck for the task at hand."
In a letter dated December 9 to President Paula-Mae Weekes, the Prime Minister advised that by-elections should be held in Arima Central (Arima Borough Corporation), Morne Coco/Alyce Glen (Diego Martin Regional Corporation), Hollywood (Point Fortin Borough Corporation), Cunupia (Chaguanas Borough Corporation) and Hindustan/St Mary (Princes Town Regional Corporation).
The former representatives for these respective districts – Lisa Morris-Julian, Symon de Nobriga, Kennedy Richards Jr, Vandana Mohit and Michelle Benjamin – are now elected MPs.
The Tobago House of Assembly (THA) elections also take place on January 25.
Nomination Day for these by-elections and the THA elections is January 4.
