RELATIVES of Joel Harracksingh, the man who was allegedly shot dead by police after a chase around the Queen’s Park Savannah, are pleading with authorities to release his body.
Relatives said Harracksingh's body remained at the mortuary at the Port of Spain General Hospital up to Wednesday. He was killed on Sunday.
The dead man’s sister, who did not wish to be named. said, “The body hasn’t reached Forensics yet.
"It is affecting the date of the funeral, because we need his death certificate and we need the documents from forensics to move forward. We were hoping to get him back by Tuesday. My mother wants to bury her son before Christmas.
"The people (victims of the car theft) said they got their car back. I can’t get my brother back.”
Newsday understands the funeral home directors are waiting for a police escort to take the body to the Forensic Science Centre in St James.
Police said at about 5 pm on Sunday, Western Division police on patrol were told of a robbery in progress at Broome Street, La Puerta Avenue, Diego Martin, where two men were stealing a black Honda CRV at gunpoint.
Police intercepted them at the Queen’s Park Savannah, and chased the CRV up St Ann’s Avenue, past St Ann’s RC Church.
The driver allegedly aimed a gun at the police and they shot at him, hitting Harracksingh. He was then taken to hospital, where he had surgery, but died. Harracksingh, 25, was from Oxford Street, Port of Spain.
A Glock pistol with six rounds of 9mm ammunition was found at the scene of the shooting.
A second man escaped into nearby bushes. He remains at large.Police Complaints Authority head David West told Newsday the PCA was investigating the shooting.
