LUCA Shamsi upset third-ranked Sebastian Sylvester in the boys Under-18 singles semi-finals when matches in the RBC Junior Tennis tournament continued at the Trinidad Country Club in Maraval, on Tuesday.
Shamsi got past Sylvester in straight sets 6-0, 6-1 to book a place in the final. In the other semi-final, top seed Ebolum Nwokolo defeated Charles Devaux 6-1, 4-6, 10-7.
In other semi-final results, first-seed Christiana Hills outlasted Shania Smith 6-1, 6-2 in the girls Under-14 singles and Gabriella Prince eased past second-seed Brianna Harricharan.
Sealing a place in the boys Under-10 final was first-seed Josiah Hills, who got past Darius Rahaman 4-0, 4-2. Hills will meet second-ranked player Jack Brown who defeated Alex Sharma 4-2, 4-1.
On Monday in the girls Under-18 singles quarter-final, Gabby Mackenzie clawed from behind to upstage the division’s top seed Charlotte Ready 2-1 and secure a place in the semi-finals.
Mackenzie was forced to dig deep in the opening set against Ready and was able to eke out a nail-biting 7-6(4) win. Ready made it all to play for in the super tie break as she levelled the field with a 2-6 comeback.
The unseeded Mackenzie, however, would not have it, and stormed to a dominant 10-1 super tie break victory and go one step closer to the final.
Second-seed Jordane Dookie survived a similar scare but was able to progress into the semi-finals. Up against the unseeded Jaeda-Lee Daniel-Joseph in the quarter-final, Dookie lost the opening set 3-6.
She was able to stage a second set comeback, winning 6-4, and then eked out a 10-5 victory in the super tie break.
Also advancing in this category was Cameron Wong, who drubbed Jada Des Vignes 6-0, 6-0.
Matches continue from 9 am on Wednesday.
