JERMAINE BLACKWOOD and Alzarri Joseph repelled a rampaging New Zealand bowling attack with an unbeaten seventh-wicket partnership of 107 on Friday as the West Indies extended the third Test to a fourth day.
The West Indies were on the brink of a three-day humiliation when they were tottering on 89/6 in their second innings, after they were skittled out for 138 before tea.
But Blackwood and Joseph decided to fight fire with fire with a number of bold shots to hold off the New Zealand's victory quest, albeit for a few hours.
Blackwood ended play on 80 (98 balls, nine fours and two sixes) and Joseph hit a Test-best 59 not out (73 deliveries, nine fours and a six), as the Windies closed the day on 196/6, 185 runs adrift of their follow-on target.
The West Indies, who started play on 49 without loss, in reply to New Zealand's 519/7 declared, were undone by the pace quartet of Tim Southee (four wickets for 35 runs), Trent Boult (1/30), Kyle Jamieson (2/25) and Neil Wagner (2/33). John Campbell topscored with 26, captain Jason Holder made an unbeaten 25, Blackwood contributed 23 and Kraigg Brathwaite 21. Shane Dowrich was unable to bat due to an injured hand.
Batting a second time, the WI batsmen, excluding Brathwaite and Joseph, were unable to cope with the swing and seam of the Black Caps' pacers.
Scores: NEW ZEALAND 519-7 dec (Kane Williamson 251, Tom Latham 86, Kyle Jamieson 51 not out, Ross Taylor 38; Shannon Gabriel 3-89, Kemar Roach 3-114) vs WEST INDIES 138 (John Campbell 26, Jason Holder 25 not out, Jermaine Blackwood 23, Kraigg Brathwaite 21; Tim Southee 4-35, Kyle Jamieson 2-25, Neil Wagner 2-33) and 196-6 (Jermaine Blackwood 80 not out, Alzarri Joseph 59 not out; Neil Wagner 2-62).
