Here are the provincial election candidates nominated in the 14 Vancouver Island ridings so far. We’ll update the list as more candidates are confirmed.
Victoria -Beacon Hill
NDP — The candidate will be announced after online voting ends at 10 p.m. tonight. After being diagnosed with Parkinson’s, 15-year-incumbent Carole James, the finance minister and deputy premier, announced in March that she would not run again. She has endorsed Grace Lore as her replacement. Stephanie Papik is also running.
Victoria-Swan Lake
NDP — Education Minister Rob Fleming has been in office since 2005.
Oak Bay-Gordon Head
Incumbent Andrew Weaver, the climate scientist who in 2013 became the first Green elected to the legislature, isn’t running again.
Former Victoria MP Murray Rankin made a splash last week when he announced he was seeking the NDP’s nomination in the riding. Most thought Rankin had left politics for good last year after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed him as the independent watchdog of Canada’s security services. Former Oak Bay councillor Michelle Kirby is also seeking the NDP nomination, which will be determined in voting that ends tonight.
The Liberals nominated lawyer Roxanne Helme in June.
Saanich South
NDP — Agriculture Minister Lana Popham has held the seat since 2009.
Saanich North and the Islands
Greens — Adam Olsen, elected in 2017, served as interim Green leader after Weaver stepped down.
Esquimalt-Metchosin
NDP — First-term MLA Mitzi Dean is the incumbent
Langford-Juan de Fuca
NDP — This is Premier John Horgan’s home riding. He has been in office since 2005.
Cowichan Valley
Greens — First-term MLA Sonia Furstenau, elected B.C. Greens’ leader Sept. 14, is the incumbent.
Liberals — Cowichan Lake public servant Tanya Kaul was just nominated.
NDP — They’re expected to name a candidate Thursday.
Nanaimo
NDP — Former member of Parliament Sheila Malcolmson won the seat in a 2019 byelection after the incumbent, Leonard Krog, stepped down to become mayor of Nanaimo.
Liberals — Ladysmith councillor Duck Paterson was just nominated.
Nanaimo-North Cowichan
NDP — Incumbent Doug Routley has been in office since 2005.
Parksville Qualicum
Liberals — Vancouver Island’s lone Liberal MLA, Michelle Stillwell, is finishing her second term.
Mid Island-Pacific Rim
NDP — Tofino Mayor Josie Osborne is running for the seat being vacated by Indigenous Relations Minister Scott Fraser
Liberals —Port Alberni councillor Helen Poon was announced as the candidate this month.
On Wednesday, Port Alberni’s Graham Hughes announced his intention to enter the race as an independent.
Courtenay-Comox
NDP — This was the tightest race in B.C. last time around, with New Democrat newcomer Ronna-Rae Leonard winning by just 189 votes after a recount. She’s running again.
Liberals — Entrepreneur Brennan Day was nominated in August.
North Island
NDP - Michele Babchuk, a Campbell River councillor and chair of the Strathcona Regional District, will run for seat held by Transportation Minister Claire Trevena, who is stepping down.
