The European Union's leading foreign minister has reportedly backed Australia's call for an independent inquiry into the origin of the coronavirus outbreak.

The EU Minister for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell said an investigation was critical to help the world recover from COVID-19.

There has been significant economic and diplomatic fall out with Beijing since Prime Minister Scott Morrison pushed for the probe, with bans on Australian abattoirs and tariffs on barley.

A vital EU motion is expected to be amended and put towards the World Health Assembly on Monday.
