PM plays down hints community sport restrictions could be eased

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has played down suggestions from the Chief Medical Officer that relaxation on restrictions for community sport could occur in the near future. Under questioning from a Senate inquiry on Thursday, Dr Brendan Murphy said he felt “community sport was a really important thing”. “There are ways to make it safer. The national cabinet will have to weigh up the public health risks verses the clear benefits of re-establishing community sport,” he said. But the prime minister, when asked, said he would prefer to ease restrictions on lower-risk activities. "I wouldn't be offering a view on that. What we are seeking to do is focus on those activities that are more low-health-risk and more high-economic-value," he said. "My priorities are to get kids back to school, to get people back to work. That's what my priority is." Image: Getty
