New Zealand Opposition Leader Simon Bridges says it is “definitely worth exploring” allowing Australians and New Zealanders to travel between the two countries in the foreseeable future amid continual coronavirus restrictions.

New Zealand will ease coronavirus restrictions next week, with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern declaring the country stopped “a wave of devastation.”

From midnight next Monday, the country will move from the current stringent stage four lockdown to stage three.

Level three restrictions including ongoing border controls, reduced domestic travel, and the continued closures in of retail and hospitality, but schools and many other businesses will be allowed to re-open provided they can maintain social distancing practices.

Mr Bridges told Sky News host Chris Kenny he is “not critical” of the restrictive measures implemented in the country to date.
“I think we’ve done the right thing in our circumstances,” he said.

He said Australia and New Zealand were “blessed countries” due to their island-status and ability to close borders more easily than countries around the world.

He also said, in some coronavirus measures, the Ardern government hasn’t “done as good a job” as that undertaken by Scott Morrison.
