"American" is referring to nationality and nothing else. Everything else goes out the window. It is only referring to the nationality and as such this is the correct wording. (One exception is a retired American football player. That "American" is referring to the sport so that is correct. Retired basketball players' articles' opening sentences always refer to nationality.) You will see the wording in featured articles, the best articles on Wikipedia. It's also consistent across Wikipedia. If you see it the other way, you should change it. To put it another way, Horace Grant is an American who is retired from basketball.
