KYLE Greaux and Akanni Hislop will be among the athletes facing the starter in the men’s sprint events at the National Gas Company National Association of Athletics Administrations Open Championships at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo, from Friday-Sunday.
Action in the championships will begin at 5 pm on Friday. The opening day will be a quiet day with just seven events scheduled. They include the men’s hammer throw final, men’s 100m heats, women’s 400m heats, men’s 400m heats, men’s 10,000m final, men’s 800m heats and the men’s 200m heats.
On Saturday, the meet will continue at 3 pm and on Sunday from 2 pm. Admission is $60 for adults and children Under-12 are free.
Greaux, 34, will be competing in the men’s 100-metre and 200m events.
“I would say the target really and truly is just to get back running decent times because of the pandemic we had certain challenges,” Greaux said.
“I myself was overcoming my own challenges coming back from injury and stuff like that.”
Greaux had knee surgery in 2020 and is trying to regain his potential again.
“I am not at my absolute best, but I am excited to compete nonetheless.”
TT athletes are using the National Open Championships to prepare or qualify for the 2022 World Championships in Oregon, USA from July 15-24 or the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, from July 28-August 8.
Greaux is setting realistic goals heading into the national championships and not thinking about qualifying for major meets.
“To be honest I just want to go through the rounds, take it round by round and execute the best possible race that I could at that point in time and whatever result I produce I have no choice but to live with that. My goal really and truly is just to execute good races,” Greaux said.
Discussing competing at the national championships for the first time since 2019, Greaux said, “It is always a pleasure competing home. You could be going through whatever challenges throughout the season when you come home you are normally optimistic, you are on a high, you will run a season-best or a personal best.”

The covid19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 and 2021 championships.
Greaux wants to see creditable performances from the younger athletes.
“Is good to see that they are producing good times and they doing well on the collegiate circuit.”
Greaux is eager to see Jerod Elcock, Eric Harrison and Kion Benjamin compete. The three athletes are in the process of making the transition from junior to senior athletes.
Hislop, who made his Olympic debut at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics held last year, is eyeing strong performances in the men’s 100m and 200m races.
Hislop, 24, may also line up in the men’s 4x100m relay event.
“It is always an honour to compete in front of everybody at home and show them all the hard work that you putting in is paying off,” Hislop said.
Hislop was part of a youthful men’s 4x100m quartet at the Tokyo Olympics which included lone veteran Richard Thompson.
Hislop said the new crop of athletes is aiming to impress. “We are all excited, we are all working for it and we been working for it since we are juniors, so it is not like it is something new to us.”
Hislop wants to run 10.00 or 10.10 in the men’s 100m this weekend. It has been a quiet season for Hislop, but he is setting himself “high expectations.”
