The High Commission of India has donated an undisclosed amount of money to the enhancement and beautification of Gandhi Park in Port of Spain and the Gandhi statue in Harris Promenade, San Fernando.
The cheque was handed over to Sharda Ramlakhan, a member of the Gandhi Seva Sangh, a local non-government organisation. Present at the ceremony were High Commissioner of India Arun Kumar Sahu, Port of Spain Mayor Joel Martinez and San Fernando Mayor Junia Regrello.
The High Commission, in a media release, said the gesture came after informal proposals were made by Martinez and Regrello in October 2019 for the upkeep of the facilities.
It noted that after consultations, some financial assistance was granted to the NGO to spearhead the work.
“In consultation with both mayors’ offices and Gandhi Seva Sangh, the high commission decided to extend some financial assistance to Gandhi Seva Sangh so that necessary renovation and beautification works could be undertaken in both places collectively.
Sahu said, “Gandhiji, championed the ideals of truth and non-violence to get independence for India. His ideas have since been spreading far and wide. Gandhiji has an important place in the hearts and minds of the people of the Caribbean, especially those in TT.
“I hope to see a better ambience in these two places when we celebrate Gandhiji’s coming birthday on October 2.”
Martinez acknowledged India's presence in the region and TT and thanked the Sahu for his efforts to get covid19 vaccines to the country.
Regrello also recognised the prolonged presence of Gandhi’s statue in San Fernando among other world personalities and the influence of his ideas on the people of TT.
