The covid19 pandemic might have put a damper on the Port of Spain City Corporation’s usual Easter Bonnet Parade but it did not entirely stop its Easter celebrations.
Instead, the corporation adapted and held an Easter egg hunt for approximately 140 children in the district. On Monday, Woodford Square, Knox Street, Port of Spain, was turned into a hunting ground for the children.
However, this was done in a measured and controlled way to ensure strict adherence to the covid19 health protocols and regulations.
Belmont South councillor Aba Kamau was the event’s main organiser.
The children were taken in groups of ten to the square according to age categories. There were two age categories: five to eight and nine to 11.

Kamau said, “We pre-registered them so that they would come staggered and enter the square (Woodford Square) in groups of ten spaced out. We would have also labelled where the hunt is with their names. So they will go there and there isn’t too much exposure and touching.”
She said this allowed for physical distancing so children would not clash with each other about the egg.
“We took all the necessary precautions to ensure that we fell within the public health protocols and guidelines and still ensuring that we were able to put on something for children within the district.”
She said the corporation felt it would have been unsuitable to host a parade that would have had massive crowds and gathering but felt the hunt was a plausible alternative to the current health restrictions.
Ten children were chosen from each district.
Port of Spain mayor Joel Martinez also attended the event.
Martinez said, “Unfortunately because of the covid19 pandemic we had to cancel that (the parade) but councillors felt let us still have something for the children.
“Children are more excited around this same time and it is Easter and a beautiful period. Since we could not have it we decided to have another event where we will create a little easter egg hunt.
